Language Other than English

At Pascoe Vale North Primary School our Language Other than English that is taught from years Prep to six is AUSLAN. The term AUSLAN is an acronym of Australian Sign Language.

AUSLAN has been developed by and for Australians who are deaf or hearing impaired. It’s a visual communication that uses hand, arm and body movements to convey meaning.

Our AUSLAN Program is our fifth specialist subject and is overseen by the classroom teacher for at least half an hour each week. Our program is an online program by Auslan Education Services. These video lessons do the explicit teaching and are filmed by deaf and hard of hearing people. The lessons include fun, interactive activities and the teacher planner guides the classroom teacher through the lesson.

Our students have been learning AUSLAN since 2023 and our community has further supported this inclusion into our curriculum.
